Asphalt-Rubber is a unique blend of
asphalt cement and ambiently ground scrap tires. This mixture is engineered and laboratory
tested to produce a new product that maintains the qualities of the asphalt and adds the
strength of the rubber without diminishing either.
-
HOW IT WORKS
When the blend of asphalt cement
and reclaimed tire rubber is reacted at temperatures exceeding 350° F, the rubber
particles swell giving the resulting material a higher viscosity and producing an asphalt
cement with improved high and low temperature properties. The rubber gives the blend
increased elasticity and flexibility. The anti-oxidants and carbon black in the rubber
significantly increase the longevity of the new binder. The high viscosity and elevated
cohesiveness of the product increase film thickness. This combination of materials
decreases aging as well as increases the strength of the binder.
-
PROCEDURES
Stress Absorbing Membranes,
(SAM), consist of a blend of 20% +/- 3% crumb rubber based on the total weight of the
Asphalt-Rubber binder. The Asphalt-Rubber is spray-applied on an existing pavement at the
rate of .5 to .7 gallons per square yard. The liquid membrane is then covered with
3/8" or 1/2" stone at the rate of 30 to 35 pounds per square yard. SAMs can be
used on roads with heavy and fast traffic where conventional chip seals are not adequate
for the conditions. SAMs provide double the pavement life of a conventional chip seal by
reducing oxidation of the surface, binding the existing surface together, reducing
spalling around existing reflective cracks, and by decreasing the amount of surface water
intrusion into the base.
-
A Stress Absorbing Membrane Interlayer, (SAMI), occurs when a layer of
asphalt hot mix is placed on top of a SAM. The purpose of a SAMI is to extend the
serviceable life of an overlay. This is achieved by retarding the rate of reflective crack
formation. The use of a SAMI also waterproofs and retards the age hardening of the
underlying asphalt pavement.
-
COST ADVANTAGES
SAMs and SAMIs are used when
pavements are in need of rehabilitation due to extensive cracking and also require
improvements of ride-ability and/or structure. This unique system results in minimum loss
of curb reveal, does not require expensive adjustments of road structures, and also
reduces the time required for costly traffic control.

ASPHALT-RUBBER HOT MIX (Gap-Graded)
Asphalt-Rubber, when
used as a binder with a gap-graded aggregate, has been proven to be a superior, cost
effective overlay. Because of Asphalt-Rubber's thick film characteristics and anti-oxidant
properties, engineers are able to reduce lift thickness while maintaining pavement life.
