Surface Treatments
STONE AND SAND SEALING FOR LONGER LASTING ROADS
An ALL STATES surface treatment will enhance your road building investment. ALL STATES offers stone and sand seals to help you keep air and water out of your road base. Coupled with the stress of traffic, these elements hasten road deterioration and if unchecked, ruin roads faster. Pavement management studies show that timely stone and sand seals significantly increase roadway longevity and reduce long term costs. Single or multiple seals are intended for pavements without significant signs of distress to maintain the wearing surface. If reconstruction becomes necessary to return the pavement to satisfactory condition, costs multiply exponentially.

THE ALL STATES RECIPE FOR SUCCESSFUL SURFACE TREATMENT

The right combination of ingredients results in a quality surface treatment: an essentially sound pavement, proper materials, modern equipment, and ALL STATES' years of experience.

AN ESSENTIALLY SOUND PAVEMENT. Your road should have decent profile and alignment and only minor asphalt aging and cracking. There should be no sign of sub-base movement, severe drainage problems, excessive cracking, or surface bleeding. When warranted, you should fill potholes and cracks, sweep stones, sand, mud and other loose debris, improve drainage, and repair subgrade failures before applying a surface treatment. Ideally stone/sand sealing should be done before patching, leveling, and repairs become necessary. Reclamation is more appropriate on roads with these defects.

PROPER MATERIALS. A stone/sand seal starts with a spray application of liquid asphalt which is immediately covered with aggregate and rolled. ALL STATES offers both emulsified and cutback asphalts. Our Holliston, MA emulsion lab tests all stone samples before formulating a compatible emulsion. We prefer a high-quality stone with heavy fractured surfaces and uniform gradation. Stone that is clean, hard, and cubical. Sand seals need fine, granular, hard, and durable sand free of organic matter.

MODERN EQUIPMENT. ALL STATES has a proud history of using state-of-the-art, well-maintained equipment. We keep our liquid asphalt distributors calibrated for uniform, fan-shaped flow, with optimal overlap from the spray nozzles, regardless of change in grade or road direction. The distributor maintains a uniform, approved temperature. Latex can be added to the emulsion for a more resilient road surface. Our self-propelled aggregate spreader can be adjusted to accurately spread any desired amount of cover aggregate per square yard in a virtually continuous operation. Very little excess aggregate remains on the finished pavement surface.

ALL STATES'  YEARS OF EXPERIENCE. Our crews are experts with our machines and well-trained in proper application techniques. On each job, our sales staff is prepared to discuss preparatory steps to surface treatment, traffic control and temperature and weather considerations.
